free keyring maker prototype online
By terlan on November 14, 2008
Lots of interest in the free online keyring maker. The first working version is up on a test server. the free keyring creator can be found at http://www.gkcd.com/free/ Its limited at the moment in its functionality, you can only make a single size of insert (40 x 32mm) and you can only use the available selection of images.
The next thing thats being worked on is the user image upload and image editing code. This will allow you to create a permament account and upload and edit your own keyrings.
This is a prototype of a online keyring creator. It is only really online for testing and shouldnt be viewed as a finished product. ( I know its ugly as sin
but its easier to test it without all the prettyness. Dont worry we’ll funky it up by the time its done.
All images within are temporary and for testing purposes. They were pulled from my harddrive and most will be dropped fromt he site before we set it live to the public, again we stress these images shouldnt be used to create commercial items unless you have a license to do so. Private personal use should be ok though.
We allow the use of the keyring maker for non profit purposes. The url of the keyring creator will change from time to time as we develop it. Please do not link directly to it, or bookmark it’s page, rather link to this page where updates on the progress and current URL will be posted.
V1 of the free keyring maker has a bare minimum of a user interface, and a more user friendly system is the next thing to be worked on.
How to use it
Select images from the various catagories till your sheet is full or you have all you want. It takes 2 inserts per keyring, 1 per side inserts are 40×32mm. A single A4 sheet holds 36 inserts.
Once you are ready to print, click the print your keyrings link, a PDF will open, right click and select print to send it to printer.
USe the leave a comment option to let me know what you think of the keyring maker and any sugggestions you might have for its future development or features you’d like it to have.

The freebie hunters guide
By terlan on July 7, 2008
You want free stuff. dont we all, I know I do. Thats why I have this website, I like getting free stuff. And to help you out I thought I’d put to gether a list of do’s and do nots for freebie hunters.
First things first, nearly every form you fill in to get freebies is going to want to know your email address and you really dont want to be using your main personal or business email address. And I know to some of you wise freebie hunters out there this isnt news, but some of the offers you sign up for arent always going to be scrupulous with the email addresses they get. So play it safe and get a freebie email account. And all of us being freebie hunters its gotta be a free one doesnt it.
Now theres the big three to go for, hotmail, yahoo or gmail. All have decent junk mail filters to help filter out the rubbish and will serve you quite well. Just make an emaiilaccount like jacks_freebies@gmail.com or the likes and your set to go. Another option is to use a tempory email account. Whats that I hear you say, These are tempory email addresses that are deleted when not getting used. You go to a site like mailinator.com and they give you a free email account. The email account is created when the first email goes to it. You dont fill in any forms, simply invent an email address with @mailinator.com at the end and give it out. You then just check the email, click the confirmation link and the accounts gone till you need it again. I like using terlansjunk@mailinator.com anyone can use it, and check it as well…. so DONT use for anything except filling in freebie forms or signing up for forums.
What else do you need to do to get freebies, well browse the net and check lots of sites, not just one. Obviously you want to come to freekeyring.com first but theres lots and lots of freebie sites, some general like freekeyring.com and others more specialised, offering free signs, kids freebies, free colouring printables, free maps and so on.
Others are forums of users who swap and link offers as soon as they are found. The freebie forum at forums.moneysavingexpert.com is about the best out there, and the rest of that site is invaluable to saving cash and getting money off things. bookmark it.
So now your browsing the web like crazy looking for freebies and downloading lots of nice free software you better get yourself protected. Theres a lot of very bad sites out there looking to put less that ethical spyware and advertising software on your PC. So plod on over to safer-networking.org and download spybot search & destroy. It will protect your computer against a wide range of spyware and threats. Give the site a bit of a read to get the lowdown on how it works and install it. Oh and did i mention its totally free.
Ok lets add just a little more protection nip over to free.avg.com and download the free antivirus software to protect you from viruses in emails and software. So now your a little more safer when you browse, but just be careful when you click yes when asked a question by a website and you should be ok.
You can go further and install firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/) and use it to browse the web, some argue its way more secure to browse the web with, while others will argue that the newer versions of internet explorer are. Me… I stay out of that argument. I use IE7….. And firefox, depending on the pc im using at the time.( hows that for a cop out.)
Another tip I would offer is to keep a text file on your desktop. Call it freebies, or similar and every time you send off for some freebie, copy and paste the url and some info about it to the bottom of the file, add the date and hit save. Then when the freebie arrives type received or similar beside it. If after a month or so the freebie hasnt arrived you can go to the freebie site you found it on and let people know that the offer might be dead and let people on the forums know too. Some freebies are time limited and unless you let the website owner know he / she will keep the link to it live.
Now if your really serious about getting freebies, move on to the next level and try blagging some gear directly from the companies themselves. Send off an email or letter ( you know those paper things that seem to take forever to get to their recipients and dont have built in spellcheckers) to companies asking for a sample. Blatant and to the point, but it does work. If you have a blog, and get good traffic just offer to blog about anyone who will send you free stuff. You would be surprised how much this works for people. Does help to have a seriously popular blog, but if you dont try you dont get.
So happy freebie hunting and if you have any tips to offer post a comment and share the information with yourt fellow freebie hunters.

Free web page templates for blogs and sites : seo and css
By terlan on July 7, 2008
Free website templates, these templates are really high quality and only need a link back which is unobtrusive and at the footer of the page to use them.
Not all of them are suitable for blogs, but with some tweaking ( if you know your css and html) they should be easily adapted to fit any website.
I’m thinking of using this free template for my new online free keyring maker when its finished, let me know what you think. The photo’s in the middle would be switched with images of keyrings and of course the title etc, would be changed to suit. But I think its a nice clean layout.

Free online keyring maker
By terlan on July 5, 2008
I’ve been making a free keyring / keyfob maker for you to use for the last month or so (this is why the site wasnt updated for a little while), I’ve got semi working online keyring making software ready at the moment. But i thought I’d get some feedback from the online community first.
The idea comes form the fact that a HUGE amount of visitors come to the site looking for free keyrings, and to be honest, the free keyring offers have been in short supply for a while. So, I decided to let you design and make your own free keyrings.
Basically you select from various image catagories whatever you want to be on on your keyrings, or you can upload your own designs. The system allows you to select up to 32 images, which is enough to make 16 keyrings, 2 images for each keyring, 1 image per side. 32 is the number of standard keyring sized images you can fit on a standard piece of a4 paper. You then get a pdf that you can print out. Then you simply cut out the keyring images and use them in blank keyrings, which you can pick up quite cheaply from from ebay or other online suppliers. I might even try and source a low cost supply for users of the site to buy at wholesale prices.
Once the free keyring making software is finished, you will be able to use different sized papers, like standard 6×4 photo paper if you only need 2 or 3 keyrings. There will also be sample templates for custom keyrings to download and then upload to the keyring creator.
Now all of this will be online, totally free, and hopefully finished soon. It should work in most of the current browsers and wont require any activex controls or plugins, other than the adobe reader.
Now what i need to know is would you use it. or will it linger in internet obsurity never to see the light of day. Leave comments to this post and let me know what you think of the idea. Theres plenty of uses i can think of for the system, your own keyring selling business at car boot sales, flea markets or ebay. Fun things for kids to make in playgroups or rainy days. But thats just me throwing out ideas.
Please leave your thoughts on the idea or suggestions for features that could be put in it. I’ll appreciate any thoughts you leave about the online keyring maker idea, good or bad.
Update
The prototype keyring maker is online at www.gkcd.com/free let me know your thoughts on this initial test version
